New River Art & Fiber [Local Yarn Shop]
New River Art & Fiber is a local yarn-and-more shop in Blacksburg, Virginia.
🧶 This visit is part of the Ultimate Virginia Yarn Crawl.
As the name might suggest, this isn’t your typical local yarn shop. I was excited to see a “hybrid” shop with different merchandise alongside yarn!
The Beginning
Not too long ago, both the local yarn and art shops in Blacksburg, Virginia had big news. Mish Mish Art Supply, the go-to art shop when I lived in Blacksburg, announced its closing. At the same time, New River Fiber Co. happened to be for sale. Hobby knitter Jessica Jones had been an art student at the local university several years before. She’d returned to the area and had been managing New River Fiber Co. since 2017.
When the opportunity to purchase the shop just happened to line up with the closure of the town’s art supply store, Jessica couldn’t resist marrying her two passions. Thus New River Art & Fiber was born.
New River Art & Fiber: The Shop
The offerings at New River Art & Fiber reflect its owner’s passion for the environment. All yarns are sourced domestically or responsibly from Europe. They are made from only natural fibers, save the small amount of rayon in some sock yarn blends.
The shop is also proud to carry yarn from Virginia dyers such as Urban Girl Yarns, Little Fox Yarn, Yarn Over Floyd, Hey Ewe Yarn, and Kim Dyes Yarn. Poke around the shop a bit more and you’ll find project and notions bags from local crafters.
If you can pull yourself away from the yarn, you’ll also find a variety of ethically sourced creative supplies for painting, sculpting, drawing, and more. The kits for children look particularly appealing right now!
Classes
This shop offers a variety of knitting classes. They’re typically scheduled by college semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer).
The most popular class, Learn to Knit, is a set of four lessons and is included free with the purchase of the Learn to Knit Kit.
A Note for Visitors
New River Art & Fiber is located in downtown Blacksburg, so parking isn’t always readily available. Church, Lee, or Jackson Streets are your best bet. And don’t park on the neighboring college campus without a permit!
