Section 3 – Blackberry Stitch

Directions for small (36″ x 40″) and large (48″ x 65″) afghans are provided as S (L).

Materials

Materials are provided for this section of the afghan only. For a comprehensive list of materials needed, return to the Summer Stitch Sampler Knit Along overview.

Yarn:
100 (215) yards of worsted weight yarn
Pictured: Caron Simply Soft in Lavender Blue (Color D)

Abbreviations

k – knit
p – purl
p3tog – purl 3 stitches together; double stitch decrease
st(s) – stitch(es)
St st – Stockinette stitch

Pattern

You will need yarn in Color D for this section.

All sections of the pattern are worked back and forth from the bottom up.

Blackberry Stitch

Blackberry Stitch has many other names, but this one totally fits with the yarn color! It is worked over multiples of 4 stitches and is not reversible.

Like last week, you’ll increase by working multiple stitches into the same stitch. This time, though, there are no yarn overs.

This is a purl-heavy stitch, so get ready to power through if purls aren’t your favorite!

Setup

With Color D, work 3 rows St st.

Stitch Pattern

Note that this pattern begins on the WS.

Row 1 (WS) – p2 *(k1, p1, k1) into the next st, p3tog* to last 2 sts, p2
Row 2 – p all
Row 3 – p2 *p3tog, (k1, p1, k1) into the next st* to last 2 sts, p2
Row 4 – p all

Repeat these 4 rows for 3.25″ (5.25″).
