Section 5 – Lattice Stitch
Directions for small (36″ x 40″) and large (48″ x 65″) afghans are provided as S (L).
Materials
Materials are provided for this section of the afghan only. For a comprehensive list of materials needed, return to the Summer Stitch Sampler Knit Along overview.
Yarn:
100 (215) yards of worsted weight yarn
Pictured: Caron Simply Soft in Sunshine (Color B)
Abbreviations
CN – cable needle
C4B – cable 4 back; sl2 to CN and hold back, k2, k2 from CN
C4F – cable 4 front; sl2 to CN and hold front, k2, k2 from CN
CR4B –cable right 4 back; sl2 to CN and hold back, k2, p2 from CN
CL4F –cable left 4 front; sl2 to CN and hold front, p2, k2 from CN
k – knit
p – purl
sl – slip
st(s) – stitch(es)
St st – Stockinette stitch
Pattern
You will need yarn in Color B for this section.
All sections of the pattern are worked back and forth from the bottom up.
Lattice Stitch
Lattice Stitch is worked in multiples of 6 stitches and is not reversible, though the WS is also quite lovely!
“Work stitches as they appear” means to work the stitch as it looks when you get to it. If there is a smooth V, knit the stitch. If there is a bump, purl the stitch. This phrasing helps avoid run-on instructions for WS rows.
If this is your first time cabling, take a few moments to review the abbreviations.
Note that the only difference between C4B and CR4B is how the stitches are worked (k2, k2 from CN versus k2, p2 from CN). The same difference — knitting or purling the stitches from the cable needle — is also found between C4F and CL4F.
As you begin working these stitches, you’ll notice that the stitches on the cable needle present as they should be worked. That is, when working from the cable needle, you should knit into knit stitches and purl into purl stitches. With this in mind, you’ll only need to remember if you’re cabling to the front/left or back/right!
Setup
With Color B, work 2 rows St st, then work these rows:
Row 1 – k3, *k4, p2* to last 3 sts, k3
Row 2 – work sts as they appear
Stitch Pattern
Row 1 – k3 *C4B, p2* to last 3 sts, k3
Row 2 – work sts as they appear
Row 3 – k3, p2, *k2, CR4B* to last 7 sts, k7
Row 4 – work sts as they appear
Row 5 – k3 *p2, C4F* to last 3 sts, k3
Row 6 – work sts as they appear
Row 7 – k7 *CL4F, k2 * to last 5 sts, p2, k3
Row 8 – work sts as they appear
Repeat these 8 rows for 3.25″ (5.25″).
Finishing
Row 1 – work sts as they appear
Row 2 – work sts as they appear
Work 2 rows St st.
Leave your stitches on the needle for next week. Weave in your tails.
