This weekend, the Virginia Museum of Transportation celebrated the season by bringing out the Candy Cane Express, a holiday-themed train!
The Museum
The Virginia Museum of Transportation is a state museum located in Roanoke, Virginia. It’s an excellent museum to visit any time of year! I’ve visited before and I always enjoy seeing the full-sized rail cars, airplanes, and other vehicles.
My children loved exploring the towns and train stops! There were several interactive areas in the museum for little ones.
I loved that each of the museum’s displays had been decorated with trees, bunting, and bows to celebrate the holidays!
The Candy Cane Express
A separate ticket is required to ride The Candy Cane Express, an out-and-back train ride featuring on-board caroling, holiday displays along the tracks, and a candy cane for each rider. The ride takes about 15 minutes.
Other Activities
During this event, there were tons of other holiday activities available, too.
Santa Claus photos were available for an additional fee. We didn’t take any photos, but St. Nick seemed friendly and certainly looked the part!
Free activities included balloon art, face painting, and a booth handing out railroad safety swag.
Several vendors were at the event. My favorites sold holiday-themed snacks (like candy cane-shaped Rice Krispies treats) and holiday-themed craft kits.
Food trucks from Yanie’s Hot Kitchen and Dirty Water Dogs set up outside in the rail yard.
We really enjoyed our visit! We’ll be sure to visit the Candy Cane Express when it returns next winter!
