Backstitches is a local yarn shop in Lynchburg, Virginia.
🧶 This visit is part of the Ultimate Virginia Yarn Crawl.
I visited Backstitches during an unseasonably cool week of late summer. The evening temperatures were dropping well into the 50s and I was itching to start some fall projects!
The Shop
Backstitches is housed in… well, a house! The original architecture makes the shop incredibly cozy and makes it easy to organize the space, room by room.
I found yarn, notions, magazines, books, and the cutest display of skeins I’d ever seen! I was blown away by the ingenuity, using skeins to make sailboats and sunshine! This photo really captures the shop’s atmosphere, full of creativity and fun.
There were several displays of finished projects in the shop, too. I especially appreciate seeing how yarn works up if it’s new or in a rarer fiber, like bamboo.
At Backstitches, there are also a couple of spaces for stitchers to gather. By the time I left the shop, one table was starting to fill with people and projects… and it was midday on a Wednesday! I’m not sure if this shop has built the stitching community or has simply figured out how best to support it, but I was impressed and wish I lived closer.
There were tons of yarns that I considered, but ultimately I chose Cherub Aran yarn by Cascade Yarns. I purchased two skeins in coordinating colors, roasted chilis (518) and grey (17), with plans to make more Musselburgh Hats with it.
