Fibre Space [Local Yarn Shop]

Fibre Space has been in the news quite a bit lately and it’s easy to see why. This charming shop is filled with beautiful yarn and kind, knowledgeable fiber enthusiasts.

🧶 This visit is part of the Ultimate Virginia Yarn Crawl.

Located at a triangular intersection in Old Town Alexandria, Fibre Space is housed in a bright blue building with a triangular-ish shape. A peek at the exterior of the shop gave me a good idea of what was in store (pun intended).

Local yarn shops all have a different flavor and I’d describe Fibre Space as both posh and fresh. My visit was delightful.

The interior of the shop is sort of triangular, too. When you walk in, the wall on the right forms a 90° angle to the door. The wall to the left slopes to the left and the shop fans out from its entrance.

As soon as I walked in, I found the needles to the left.

Remember card catalogs? There’s a fantastic shelf that reminded me of a card catalog with its drawers removed.

Each of the little openings had several packs of needles inside. The legend ran across the top (needle sizes) and down the side (cable length or dpn). This ingenious system helped me find exactly what I was looking for! (In this case, it was a set of US #3/3.25mm ChiaoGoo double-pointed needles.)

Yarn

Then I moved to the right, where I found yarn. The shop is organized by weight and starts with lace and fingering. I went aisle by aisle, watching the thickness of the skeins grow.

Fellow knitters, there are some high-end yarns in this shop! After I spent a significant amount of time drooling over a giant kit of Marina by Manos del Uruguay, I found its price tag. It was in the triple digits! It’s out of my price range, but maybe I’ll get lucky for Christmas!

There were several other yarns on the higher end of the expense and, it’s important to note, quality scale, too.

They were all stunning!

Books, Notions, & Other Goodies

The section for books took up a smaller portion of the shop, but it was enough for several books on knitting. There were a handful of books on crochet, too. The photo doesn’t do the bookcase justice. It juts out of the wall and its ends are irregular. It’s very art deco!

At Fibre Space I also found learn-to-knit kits, pompom garland kits, and several other ready-to-go craft kits.

The notions and accessories were almost endless! Staples like stitch holders and Eucalan and could be found by wooden swatch and WPI tools, leather bracelets that doubled as measuring tapes, and unique stitch marker sets.

I scooped up an adorable Fibre Space-branded tape measure, too. (You can never have too many!)

I hadn’t seen any shops with pins before, but Fibre Space seems to have quite the collection. Look how great these are!

I love the space theme that Fibre Space employs. The ringed yarn planet pin is my absolute favorite!

The project bags that were on display were beautiful, too. If I had a second Christmas wish, it would be for one of these! Definitely the alpacas.

Fibre Space is definitely a shop with personality. I recommend visiting if you are ever near Northern Virginia or Washington, DC!
