Mohair Stripes Sweater [Knitting Pattern]

The Mohair Stripes Sweater is a fun, funky pattern made of fuzzy yarn in varying weights. I created it for my daughter, who loves wearing see-through clothes with layers.

A few years ago, my daughter was given a beautiful cardigan in grey and white stripes. I adored it, but it didn’t have the color pop she wanted.

The Mohair Stripes Sweater is a vibrant reincarnation of that cardigan in pullover form!

The Mohair Stripes Sweater is a fun and easy knit. Oversize needles and fine mohair yarn work together to help Stockinette mimic open lacework. Wear a tank top in a contrasting color underneath to complete the look!

My dear friend, Angie, brought me back some beautiful alpaca yarn from her last visit to Peru. Rowan Alpaca Soft in Blossom is the closest match I have been able to find.

The mohair yarn used in this design was a hand-dyed blend by a local dyer. Replicate this look with a fingering-weight mohair/acrylic/wool blend or other fingering weight-yarn with a “halo.”

Pattern

This sweater is worked from the top down in the round. The collar is worked first, then the body to the sleeves. The sleeves are then set aside, the body is worked until complete, and the sleeves are finished last.

Using US #7/4.55 mm and Rowan Alpaca Soft in Blossom held double, CO 78 (82, 94, 94) sts.

Work in k1, p1 rib for 6 (6, 8, 8) rounds.

Raglan Setup

*k 13 (13, 14, 14), pm, k 26 (28, 33, 33), pm* twice

Raglan Yoke

Change to US #11/8.00 mm and mohair yarn and begin increasing.

Increase Rounds:

2 – k all

Repeat the last 2 rounds twice.

Six rows of mohair increases worked.

Change to US #9/5.50 mm needles and Rowan Alpaca Soft.

From this point on, the raglan is worked in stripes. After working 14 rounds of Rowan Alpaca Soft with US #9/5.50 mm needles, work 6 rounds of mohair with US #11/8.00 mm needles. Continue alternating in this manner.

Continue working the increase rounds until there are 150 (162, 174, 190) sts.

Work even until work measures 5.5″ (6″, 6.5″, 6.5″).

Separate

Place first set of sleeve stitches on stitch holder or waste yarn, removing stitch markers.

CO 6 (6, 7, 8) sts under the arm and knit across back of sweater.

Repeat these steps with the second set of sleeve stitches and the front of the sweater. Leave the end of round stitch marker in place.

Body

Continuing to alternate yarn/needles, work in St st until piece measures 7″ (9″, 12″, 14″) from cast-on stitches at underarm.

If the indicated length is reached in the middle of a mohair section, finish that section before moving forward.

Change to US #7/4.55 mm needles and, if needed, Rowan Alpaca Soft.

Work in k1, p1 rib for 8 (8, 10, 10) rounds.

BO loosely in pattern using US #9/5.50 mm needles.

Sleeves

Place sleeve sts on appropriate needle size for next round of stripe pattern.

Knit all sts, picking up an additional 6 (6, 7, 8) sts under the arm.

Continuing to alternate yarn/needles, work in St st until piece measures 2.5″ (2.5″, 3″, 3″) from cast-on stitches at underarm.
