Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory is Port Orleans French Quarter‘s quick-service dining hall that serves American favorites with Cajun and creole touches. In this old factory building, a Mardi Gras celebration dances overhead!
I had dinner at Sassagoula Floatworks my second night at Port Orleans Riverside. I enjoyed the ten-minute walk down the bank of the Sassagoula River to Riverside’s sister resort, Port Orleans French Quarter. (You can also take the Sassagoula River Cruise if you don’t feel like walking.) I explored the resort a bit before wandering into Sassagoula Floatworks for dinner.
Dinner
Port Orleans French Quarter had only just opened the week before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of service or quality. I was happy to discover that there were no kinks to be worked out and everything was running smoothly.
Like the Riverside Mill & Market at the resort next door, there were tons of options at Sassagoula Floatworks. There was also quite a bit of overlap between the two menus. This made it simpler. I keyed in on the items that were different, looking especially for items that showcased the flavor of the French Quarter.
The gumbo had a bit more kick than the jambalaya I’d had the night before, but I wouldn’t have called it spicy. It was very tasty, though, with a rich gravy-broth and large chunks of chicken thigh.
Drinks
I used the 50th Celebration Resorts Refillable Mug I’d already purchased to load up on soda. I noticed that French Quarter had Freestyle machines (the kind with touchscreens). While Riverside had soda machines, they were the traditional kind with one flavor per spout.
Dessert
One dessert is unique to Sassagoula Floatworks. As you might have guessed, it’s the Mardi Gras King Cake! I had to have one.
While it was vibrant and lovely, it wasn’t really a king cake. It was a dense cake with frosting. I was a bit disappointed that it didn’t even have a baby!
It was a good cake and I’d eat it again, but I’d probably call it a “Mardi Gras pound cake.”
While this wasn’t the best food I’ve ever eaten on Disney property, it definitely holds its own for quick service dining at resorts. I loved being able to find something unique and flavorful here!
