Section 10 – Thorn Stitch
Directions for small (36″ x 40″) and large (48″ x 65″) afghans are provided as S (L).
Materials
Materials are provided for this section of the afghan only. For a comprehensive list of materials needed, return to the Summer Stitch Sampler Knit Along overview.
Yarn:
100 (215) yards of worsted weight yarn
Pictured: Caron Simply Soft in Lavender Blue and Off-White (Colors D and E)
Abbreviations
k – knit
k2tog – knit 2 stitches together; single right-leaning decrease
p – purl
sl – slip
ssk – slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit these 2 stitches together through back loops; single left-leaning decrease
st(s) – stitch(es)
St st – Stockinette stitch
wyib – with yarn in back
wyif – with yarn in front
yo – yarn over
Pattern
You will need yarn in Colors D and E for this section.
All sections of the pattern are worked back and forth from the bottom up.
Thorn Stitch
Two-color Thorn Stitch really pops with two sharply contrasting colors! Less like thorns and more like flowers, the resulting fabric looks lovely in green and pink.
Thorn Stitch is worked across multiples of 4+1. It is not reversible.
Setup
With Color E, work 2 rows St st.
Stitch Pattern
Color E:
Row 1 – k6 *(k1, yo, k1) into next stitch, k3* to last 2 sts, k2
Color D:
Row 2 – p5 *sl3 wyif, p3* to last 3 sts, p3
Row 3 – k5 *k2tog, sl1 wyib, ssk, k1* to last 3 sts, k3
Color E:
Row 4 – p7 *sl1 wyif, p3* to last 5 sts, p5
Row 5 – k8 *(k1, yo, k1) into next st, k3* to last 4 sts, k4
Color D:
Row 6 – p7 *sl3 wyif, p3* to last 5 sts, p5
Row 7 – k7 *k2tog, sl1 wyib, ssk, k1* to last 5 sts, k5
Color E:
Row 8 – p5 *sl1 wyif, p3* to last 3 sts, p3
Continue repeating Rows 1 to 8 until section measures 3.25″ (5.25″).
Finishing
With Color E, work 2 rows St st.
Leave your stitches on the needle for next week. Weave in your tails.
