The Green Goat Restaurant in Roanoke, Virginia
My niece has been raving about The Green Goat restaurant in Roanoke, Virginia for quite some time. I couldn’t wait to try it out!
About The Green Goat Restaurant
The Green Goat Restaurant is located on the banks of the Roanoke River, near Wasena Park and a stretch of the Roanoke River Greenway.
The building that houses the Green Goat Restaurant is a former railyard freight depot. It was vacant for nearly 40 years before its renovation!
Our Experience
It was an unseasonably warm day and we took advantage of the ample outdoor seating. It wraps around the restaurant, partially on the deck and partially on the ground. We chose the rocky side with fire pits because it had more elbow room.
I imagine that with the hanging lights and fires going, this place could look quite magical in the evening!
While we looked over the menu, our children played in the open field, climbed trees, and played with oversized Jenga blocks. This gave them a chance to shake their sillies out and enjoy the spring-like weather.
They also enjoyed watching skaters at the park across the field.
The Menu
The menu at The Green Goat really features sandwiches and pizza. It sounds basic but is anything but. Each menu item is served with a simple twist, like the turkey Rueben and sweet-and-spicy cole slaw.
There are also several southern favorites on the menu, including pimento cheese toast and fried green tomatoes.
I had one of my favorite sandwiches, a Cubano. There is always some debate about what should or should not be on this sandwich, but The Green Goat includes pork that was roasted in-house, ham, garlic dill pickles, sweet and spicy mustard, and swiss cheese on a brioche roll. It’s served with chips, also made in-house.
The sandwich was excellent!
As you can see, the pickles are thick! They were also delicious. I did opt for the mustard on the side; I didn’t want it to ruin the sandwich if I didn’t care for it. I ended up eating most of the sandwich without it.
The Kids’ Menu
The Kids’ Menu features all the staples you’d expect, plus an adorable kid to color. It’s literally a kids’ menu! (Get it?)
I most appreciated the $3.00 sundaes. At that price point, I can afford for each of my kids to have one!
