Voodoo Doughnut: Quirky, Delightful Sweets

When planning our trip to Universal Orlando, I stumbled across the beautiful and creative pastries of Voodoo Doughnut in CityWalk. It doesn’t take much to convince me to try new sweets, but I was really excited about these!

Voodoo Doughnut

Voodoo Doughnut is a delightfully quirky shop. It almost looks a cotton candy dream married the macabre. The main color of the brightly-lit shop is baby pink, but the stylized lettering and icons are black and look like they stepped out of a creepy carnival. While they seem like opposites, they do marry well.

I could see my two daughters each embracing this shop and its menu for very different reasons!

One notable fixture of the shop is the doughnut throne. It’s located outside, so even if you aren’t into doughnuts, you can snap a quick photo on this guy. It’s definitely a fun selfie spot!

The Doughnuts

Voodoo Doughnut offers yeast and cake doughnuts in several different flavors, including seasonal options. You can get a good look at all of them from the queue. Several of the doughnuts fall into one of the two shop themes, too. Some are doughnut shop staples, but many are either bright and fun or dark and edgy.

Doughnuts that would interest my youngest daughter include the Little Pink (strawberry frosting and pink sprinkles), the Grape Ape (purple frosting, grape dust, and lavender sprinkles), and The Loop (vanilla frosting with Froot Loops). My oldest, however, would definitely prefer the Portland Cream (Bavarian cream with chocolate frosting and eyeballs) or the ODB (chocolate frosting, Oreos, and peanut butter).

I went with a Voodoo Doll, the house doughnut. It is a yeast doughnut topped with chocolate frosting. It includes a pretzel rod, which is a perfectly-sized “stake.” Surprisingly, it was sturdy enough to get several good stabs in, exposing the doughnut’s raspberry filling.

The doughnut was delicious! It was served fresh, it had just the right amount of frosting, and the jam inside was balanced. It was quite large, though, and while I probably should not have eaten it in one sitting, I did.

What surprised me most about Voodoo Doughnut was not the quality, but the cost. While some specialty doughnuts like The Voodoo Doll cost about $3.50, most of the doughnuts were priced around $1.50. I was surprised to find a treat this affordable! Per-doughnut cost also drops significantly if you purchase a dozen (or a coffin full) of doughnuts.

While Voodoo Doughnut isn’t unique to Universal CityWalk, the other locations are all west of the Mississippi. If you’re going to be nearby, I recommend a stop!
