Yarn Matters: The Shop
Yarn Matters opened in the summer of 2016 and is owned by Marina and Kevin Hayes.
The shop proudly displays several finished projects. I recognized Papillon and Sheldon, but found as I browsed that several of the other patterns were Marina’s own designs! Some of them are only available at the shop.
I expected to find LYS mainstays (Cascade, Malabrigo, Debbie Bliss, etc.), but I was thrilled to find that the shop also carries yarn from several local artists! I recognized many of the Virginia dyers. The inventory included several I didn’t know, plus some from Maryland, too. There were also buttons and stitch markers made by local artists!
There’s also yarn under the the Yarn Matters label, available at the shop and on Etsy.
The Experience
Marina was at the shop when we visited and she showed infinite patience with my endless browsing, touching, and picture-taking. She also showed significant patience with my children.
As a general rule, I don’t take my children into yarn shops if I can help it. I touch everything, so they don’t understand why they can’t. Well, it’s because they are generally grubby, aren’t gentle, and don’t put things back where they found them. In short, they’re kids!
My husband had taken the kids to play with a frisbee out back while I browsed. Of course, they eventually got restless and one by one, they trickled in to find me. Marina had alphabet blocks and Lalaloopsy dolls to keep them occupied. I’ve been to other shops with “kids’ corner” areas and still got the vibe that my kids weren’t actually welcome; this was not the case at Yarn Matters.
Still, I felt a bit rushed by the kids. I didn’t find the right buttons or yarn for my current projects, though I’m sure the yarn was there and I just didn’t feel I had time to find it.
I settled on an adorable novelty yarn (Top This). I’ll definitely be back!
